PolyU GreenCoin

Background
The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) launched GreenCoin, an incentive-based sustainability programme designed to promote campus-wide environmental initiatives and encourage long-term behavioral change among students and staff. As sustainability and decarbonisation became increasingly important strategic priorities, PolyU sought a digital solution that could both engage the campus community and make sustainable actions measurable, rewarding, and visible.
The challenge was to transform everyday green behaviors—such as participating in sustainability events, completing eco-missions, and adopting low-carbon habits—into a structured, motivating experience. PolyU needed a mobile platform that could serve as a digital wallet for rewards, provide personalized carbon tracking, enable mission discovery through an interactive map, and facilitate seamless reward redemption. The solution had to be user-friendly, scalable, and capable of integrating engagement features like badges, referrals, quizzes, and event registration to sustain long-term participation.
Solution
AppicIDEA designed and developed the GreenCoin mobile application, a comprehensive digital ecosystem that gamifies sustainability engagement across the PolyU campus. The app empowers users to earn GreenCoins through completing missions, participating in events, answering in-app green tips quizzes, and referring friends—turning environmentally responsible actions into rewarding experiences.
We implemented a comprehensive coin management system, allowing users to track earnings, usage history, balances, and expiry reminders through a digital wallet interface. A personalized carbon profile provides users with insights into their carbon savings and environmental impact, reinforcing positive behavior through measurable results.
To enhance engagement, we integrated features such as a dynamic Mission Map, event registration, automated badge generation with monthly personalization, push notifications, and in-app support communication. The platform also includes a seamless e-coupon redemption system, enabling users to convert earned coins into rewards such as catering discounts, sports facilities access, sustainable products, and vouchers.
The result is a scalable, interactive, and user-centric mobile solution that not only drives sustainability awareness but also builds an active green community within the PolyU campus.
